So I'm looking to lay a new patio as our current slabs are all broke chipped ect Ive took a few slabs up and found old sort of cement on each corner of old slab and what I think is type 1 I've never laid slabs before can I just remove slabs lay sand and put new slabs down or will I need to dig out the whole area
I have pictures on my phone but not sure how to upload them

If you can successfully remove the old slabs and bedding layer, and there is sufficient sub base, then you could lay ontop, providing there is no obvious sinkage
I would recommend you run a compactor plate over the whole area first

The "old sort of cement" is most likely some awful Spot Bedding and will definitely have to go. What lies beneath, if it is a Type 1 or equivalent sub-base, and it's still sound, even and stable, then that can probably be re-utilised.
