Hi there, we're planning on putting in an arbour at the end of our garden and I'm just wondering what the best approach is to prepare for it.
We will take out the turf around the area currently marked by the planks and place the arbour onto some flags which match the existing path.
The size of the arbour means that I will need to put down 8x 45cm2 flags in a 4x2 layout with the narrowest width of the garden being around 190cm. The remaining area will be gravelled with an edge put in between that and the turf.
Am I best to simply dig out the turf and soil, put down some type 1 over the whole area and then mortar in the flags where necessary and lay gravel around it.
Is this the right approach and if not what is? Also, what depths should we be talking please?
Is this 'arbour' fixed into the ground, fixed to the paving, or free-standing?
The most likely route to success is to excavate, install the sub-base, then bed the flags on a full mortar bed, and dress the surround with your prefered gravel. All of this is detailed on the main website - Laying Flags
