I want to use some pitch jointing on about 25m2 of setts. I'm just wondering how much pitch to buy. The Colas 'sett grout' works out at about £11 per 25k bag, however it's about a 3 hour round tip for me to pick it up: I think I only need about 5 bags going on the coverage rates they specify. I can buy some pitch locally at £15 a 7.5kg bag.
Just wondering roughly how much pitch I will need? Also, anyone any idea why the basic pitch is dearer than the specially designated 'sett grout'?

The quantity required is calculated by determining the average joint width, multiplying that by the average joint depth, and then multiplying that by the average joint length per square metre of paving. This gives a volume that can then be multiplied by a density figure to give an estimate of the weight of jointing required.
The price quoted for Sett Grout seems a little on the cheap side, given the quantity you require. That's not far from the price I was quoted for a 2,800m² job last year. As for the local pitch, I assume that will be roofing bitumen, which is 'softer' than Sett Grout and so is best avoided. The 'going rate' for roofing bitumen, in small quantities, seems to be around 15 quid for a 25kg block. I've never seen 7.5kg blocks: are you sure it is bitumen and not flooring asphalt?
