Hi all,

I have a question about whether I should be using edge restraints.

Im laying a shed base and a patio side by side at the back of our garden seperated by 4 inches of gravel.

The garden has a natural fall across it as we're on a slight hill (our neighbours garden on the right is slightly higher, on the left slightly lower...)

The issue I have is at the moment the patio will be starting around 2 inches lower than the shed base. I've worked out a 1 in 60 fall for the patio falling away from the shed, so at the moment it's highest point is on the shed side, but still 2 inches lower than the shed base.

I was originally thinking I could build up the subase/hardcore higher for the shed base, but after more research I think perhaps I should seperate the area into two sections seperated by edge restraints to hold the hardcore in position. Is this necessary? Or can I build the subase higher in one area with the 4 inches between shed base and patio to allow for the difference in height?

Should I also be looking to use edge restraints where the patio and shed base meet the lawn and back fence to hold the subase in position or will the exisiting ground be enough to hold the material in position?

This is my first project of this sort - I've spent hours researching, but it's hard to find advice on this sort of issue!

btw - Im aiming for 7.5 cm compacted hardcore, then 4 cm full mortar bed 8:1 mix...

Thanks in advance for you help.
