Mouldy sandstone

Hi everyone, I have priced a patio job and as the client hasn't decided what slab she wants I priced it based on the slabs costing £20 per square meter. She has replied saying that she doesn't want slabs that go mouldy and grow alge and she thinks a slab costing that sort of money is a cheap slab. She says the cheaper slabs are softer stone which absorbs water hence the mould Is there any Indian sandstone paving I should steer clear of please? Many thanks guys

The fossil mint colours tend to be tougher regarding maintenance and the rainbow, although this isn't really sold by any of the leading manufacturers anymore. Kandla/ Promenade/ Light grey or Autumn brown colours are generally the hardest sandstones. Alternatively, if your customer can stretch to around £33 per m2 incl VAT, then point them towards porcelain as there won't be any issues with algae growth with this.

Sorry George, but you can still get algae even on porcelain, north facing etc, I clean them so does exist

there is a display in Butterfields that has been there over 10 years now,the best wearing stone for lack of algae etc is the castle grey (kandla)
porcelain by its nature will not absorb anything ,but as a lot of it isnt smooth deitritus can accumulate
avoid mint
teak
rainbow
silver grey or light grey granite
black limestone
as these seem to be the most problematic stone
