Hi there,

I'm designing a new disabled access pathway for a small community project that needs to take visitors from the car park to a new studio. Approx length of path: 45m.

Unfortunately the site is made up of a very heavy clay soil, is near to trees and is south facing, so I understand that it'll experience a lot of movement as it saturates in winter & dries out in summer.

Can anyone suggest what the best material & sub-base might be for these conditions? The path needs to have a smooth surface for wheelchairs and be low maintenance. Is there a surface that is flexible enough to avoid cracking, yet remains flat & easy to wheel over?

Any suggestions / comments will be gratefully received!

Many thanks :)

I'd look to use gravel-filled grid/cellular pavers. They can flex and move as necessary and they are relatively cheap.

The only issue might be whether the planners will accept this as disabled-friendly. In some areas, they are happy enough, while elsewhere they claim that it's still looose gravel so not acceptable.

Have a read of this page and see what you think.
