Hi all,

I'm new to the brew cabin but been a browser for many years.

I have an issue in which I'm hoping for some advice.

I laid some Yorkstone paving just over 4 weeks ago. when it was laid and pointed it looked good and the customer was happy. However I have returned to find individual slabs have become a extremely awful brown colour.

All the paving has been laid on a sharp sand and cement bed and pointed with a cement based pointing slurry however they haven't been sealed (yet).

I personally don't believe this issue has been caused by anything installation wise other wise the staining wouldn't be confined to each individual piece of stone.

I know it being a natural product may make it more difficult but do you guys think i have valid grounds to ask for replacements? I have contacted the supplier but I'm yet to have a response.

The job needs to be rectified regardless however I'm after some impartial advice/opinions on the stone to determine how I go about resolving the issue.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have laid metres and metres of yorkstone mainly Marshalls fine sawn. Never seen it go like that before. It must be to do with the resin or the sbr if you painted the backs.

I would definitely be getting a rep round to have a look. And sorry thought you used resin. What slurry did you use

Hi ya,

Thanks for the comments. It was pointed with Steintec Tuff top.

No SBR was used. I'm baffled as to why if its a stain or issue caused by installation it isn't spread everywhere and not just to individual paving slabs.

How certain are you that this is genuine ENGLISH yorkstone, from t'Pennines, and not one of the inferior sandstones brought in from various parts of Asia and sold as york stone (that space makes all the difference!)

I can't recall seeing that effect with genuine new yorkstone, but I have seen it with some of the Chinese york-ish-sort-of Tower sandstone, and one of the Indian copies.

I'm not saying it can't be genuine yorkstone, only that I can't recall a single case (in over 50 years of gawping at yorkstone flags) where I;ve sen that effect, but there's a first time for everything!

I would be fairly confident it is a problem with the stone, as it is clearly limited to individual flags and not spread across the entire pavement. the fact that it's also clusterd in one location suggests you were feeding from one pack, sequentially, and it's a bad batch of stone, cust, sawn, processed and packed together.

Really looking forward to what bulsh.....err....explanation the supplier comes up with!

Well I was fairly certain it was genuine, it's listed on there website as pennine buff yorkstone and in product description its claimed that it is locally quarried.

I've contacted the supplier and still awaiting a response. Will chase later on this afternoon.
