I am going to build a path through a wildlife and wetland park. I need this path to be hard wearing, not slippy, and not black in appearance. I think loose gravel is too hard to walk on and asphalt chippings has the wrong look
I made a sample section with 6 inches of chalk stone topped off with a couple of inches of something called 'crusher run' which i got from Jewson. This seems to have recent effect, but the crusher run is very expensive in 1 tonne loads from jewson, and Im not sure where to go to get it in bulk.
Firstly, do you think im on the right track with the method
Secondly, Where would I get this crusher run stuff?

hmmm...what does your crusher run look like, just out of interest?
given that its bagged, I would guess lots of fines and not a lot of bigger graded stuff, which will not be a lot of use when it gets rained on i.e. it will turn to mud

You will be able to get crusher run in large, loose loads from your local aggregates company. Firms like Hansen, Lafarge, Yoeman, etc., all do it. Simon is right to warn you about its longevity as it's usual application is as a base for paving.

Ok, sounds like im barking up the wrong tree with crusher run.
I just want a hard stone finish that can be rolled flat and wont be loose. Any ideas?

A decent local BM should be able to help. Failing that, try Travis Bloody Perkins or one of the other usual suspects.
Price depends on how far it has to be hauled and just what type of gravel you choose.

I used A1 Plant and Haulage in Elvington for my Type 1 and gravel. They may do self binding, give them a ring. The prices seemed good and they were willing to negotiate on delivery costs, IYSWIM...

You've also got the option of resin bonded aggregate but this needs to be laid on tarmac or concrete which'll certainly push the costs up, but it's an option you may like to consider.
