Hello all,
big fan of the site, it's been really useful in the past, but I'm just a DIYer and I've hit on a problem that I'd really appreciate some help with from someone more knowledgeable.
I've laid a couple of patios before and I've always done the edging first, then added the sub-base. But for the latest project I'd really like to avoid using any edging to get a crisp, clean modern look to the paving.
Something like this:
But I'm not sure how to go about it. I'm worried that if I just omit the edging the sub base could spread over time into adjacent flowerbeds and cause subsidence or be infiltrated by roots/worms etc.
This is how I've done things in the past:
I thought about using a concealed concrete 'beam' under the perimeter of the paving, but I don't know if it's a good idea or if it would cause differential settlement between the slabs over the concrete and the slabs over the type 1.

My plan has paving surrounded by flowerbeds (the areas in black). I've already excavated the entire garden to a depth of 150-200mm. I've got 600x400 granite slabs from London Stone and plenty of type 1 waiting to go down, just need to figure out this edging issue before I can crack on.
