does anyone know where I would stand if as some people know I had someone start to lay slabs and half way through it came to light that the job he was doing was not good at all, I have checked the slabs and all are loose and have 4 corners joints and massive gaps under the slabs, closer inspection the work is very poor as well, I have spoken to him and discussed the problem and has said he would correct things. I suggested he lays a full bed and uses the correct procedure to make sure the slabs are stuck and the joints are of some uniform, he has said he does not do a full bed and would cost more money, I said if he had done it correctly first it would not have had to cost more, where do I stand as I have not received a written quote or anything, he has done other work in the garden like fencing and turfing which has been satisfactory. the patio is 50SQM and needs 3 steps putting in around it, I have told him I do not want him to carry on as he seems to not be able to do the job. I have been quoted £3000 to sort the mess out and this is roughly a little more he was going to charge me, can I just refuse to pay anymore money and walk away??

Has he supplied materials, they will need to be paid for.
Assuming you've paid him for the works that you are satisfied with, the fence and turf, it may be easier to offer him an amount to walk away.
If he agrees make sure he signs for it.
You can draw a line under it then and start afresh without the probability of an ongoing agenda.
