Hi guys,

I'd really appreciate some opinions on whether or not it's OK to have an area of concrete and another area of MOT type 1 as a sub-base under the same patio?

I'm trying my hand at paving the back garden. We've got a 10m2 patio adjacent to the house and have decided to replace the existing paving slabs and extend the patio by another 20m2.

So far I've removed the existing pavers & chipped away the old mortar, leaving just the concrete base that they were sitting on. I've also excavated the rest of the area to be paved ready to bring in MOT type 1 as a sub-base.

What I'd like to know is if it's ok to keep the concrete base & compact the type 1 up against it, or if I should remove the concrete and use type 1 all over instead? Will the type 1 settle slightly in the future or is it possible to compact it enough to keep it at the same level as the concrete?

If the is below your finished level anbin decent condition it should be fine to have the other area type 1 just compact it well.
On the other hand if the concrete is too low giving you more than a 50mm bed then you'll either need to rip it out or use some fine type 1 to build it up, but if your type one has lots of large aggregate you'll probably be better off taking it out

You'll be going from rigid to flexible, expect some differential settlement.
