hi

after a bit of advice i'm currently about to clean and seal some san rainbow sandstone prior to laying. going through the pallets i notice a large proportion of the slabs have visible marks that i'm guessing are saw marks. i've attached 2 photos of a couple of them to show you what i mean.

anyone who's laid sawn sandstone, is this normal or have I bought a couple of pallets of rejects?

any advice appreciated

thanks in advance

roly

that rainbow sandstone is a soft as fudge, i know the gaffer here looked at a kitchen where it had been laid and in 12months 6mm or so had worn away between the sink and the fridge route

its not suitable for outside use and will stain super easy, as for the saw marks no the stuff I've seen has had no saw marks on the face, whats the other side like

hi

thanks for the response. i think i am going to bite the bullet and get something else. it's going to be a false ecconomy if i have to re-lay something in a few years. i've got kids and just from moving them about i can see how easily they will damage, which will be especially visible with a sawn face.

i saw a thread on here saying which were the most durable of the sandstones but can't find it. i know someone said kandala was the toughest. i've seen camel dust/sunset buff or the fossil mint which both look nice. are these pretty durable do you know?

Mint is pretty soft too.

Kandla grey is by far my favourite. Raj green is also good but certainly where i am it is much harder to get within the last few years.

One of the browns, i think Autumn brown is also good but I have never used it as its rarely been available where i am.

Recommend the kandla and raj as well - these both have less than 1% porosity as a general rule (if a reputable material is used). It's not the only relevant measurement in this case, but certainly gives a good overall guide to the possible aftercare required.
