Paving edge and whats this ?

Could anyone tell me if i can remove these 2 brick structures , the back one seem like its just for planting ? not sure what the front one has any purpose for ?
also is there any reason why some paving edging close to wall of house
is finnished of with shingles ect is it just a personal preference ?
I have bought drain channel and wish to install it against the house .

If it's not structural then it should be ok to remove, unless it's retaining something. Maybe the shingle was personnel preference, or a work around because compromising the150 below dpm level. On the noticeboard on the main page are instructions for uploading photo's.
