just looking for a little help, bought a new build and the garden is rectangle just all grass except a small patio outside patio doors
so im looking to build two patios one outside patio doors and one at top of garden to host a seating area and bbq
have read through site and looked around and the prices seem to vary widely from £12 a sqm upto £50 sqm i think i have settled on Autumn Brown sandstone calibrated and probably looking to spend about £375 (£15 sqm) and just wondering is there anything i need to watch out for when picking a company to use ?
also is there any sites i can work out how much subbase i will need and cement and sand ? and also will i need to put a membrane between soil and sub base
probably gonna have lots more questions but think this will help me get started

A few things to bare in mind when buying natural stone:yapper1901 wrote:have read through site and looked around and the prices seem to vary widely from £12 a sqm upto £50 sqm i think i have settled on Autumn Brown sandstone calibrated and probably looking to spend about £375 (£15 sqm) and just wondering is there anything i need to watch out for when picking a company to use ?
1. Colour variation. The batch of stone you buy is never going to look exactly as per the picture in the brochure or website, always expect some natural variation. If its possible go and visit the supplier and ask if you can see some of their current stock. Always worth having a look if you can
2. Excessive riven and looses cleft is always a sure fire sign of poor quality stone. If you do go and see before you buy keep an eye out for stone that is excessively bumpy or has loose cleft on the surface

ok thanks just been doing a bit of research and it tells me to dig down 150mm the to lay between 50mm and 100 mm of mot type 1 not a couple of questions
1 ) the type 1 MOT the 50mm is that compacted ? or do I need to lay double what ever it is going to be compacted to
2) if my flags are going to be 22mm calibrated whats a ideal dig down i.e what layer of type 1 mot ? what layer of cement ?
thanks in advance

100mm base, around 30-40mm mortar bed plus the slab.
Type 1 can be a bugger to level and shouldn't be compacted in more than 75mm layers, so get it there about at 75mm compact and top up to final level with 20mm to dust, compact area again.
If you want to get your base spot on screed the final layer with a long bar or a plank before compacting.
