I have recently levelled my garden and about to put in a new sandstone paving (from LondonStone) patio but I have a couple of questions. Firstly, in levelling the garden the ground height of the original low side is now about 15 cm higher than the bottom of the neighbours fence. I used timber placed against the concrete fence posts while carrying out the levelling but the new patio is going to run along the whole length of the fence so I need some form of retaining wall to support the 15cm sub-grade, 10 sub-base etc. Would I be best to dig out a trench below the original level, concrete and then lay blocks up to the correct level? Or is there a better solution?

Secondly, the patio is going to be L shaped along the back of the house and 1 side of the garden (see diagram attached), what is the best way to handle the fall?

a cheap way would be to use a slab on edge retainer ,if set to falls this would work to say 35mm below your flags
falls are mainly an onsite thing but you need to get it falling at 1:75 away from the house ,but level along the house line

Thanks for the order, looking forward to seeing progress shots of the project.

The only issue with laying a timber edge along the fence is that it could get disturbed when/if the neighbour replaces the fence. Judging by the nick of the panels that could be anytime soon

A block retainer would be a more permanent solution but its obviously a much bigger job as you will need to put a footing in.

How close are you intending the finished edge of your paving to be to your neighbours fence?
