Hi,
I am laying a garage base...
I have a path that runs round the side of the house.
I want to use all the space at the side as a car port or garage base.
So...
should I just lay the concrete up to come level with the path?
or
should I dig up the path and lay the whole thing lower?
Laying it lower would be preffered by me as when I sort out the front garden and make into a drive it will be at a gentler angle from the new base to the street.
But digging the path up will be a lot more work.
Laying it to the hight of the existing path will be a whole lot less work as it's half ready but when I come to making the front garden into a drive the angle will be steeper between the new base and the street.
What would you guys do???

I have decided to bring the base up to the level of the path.
Can you tell me the right order to do things in please.
Is this right:
1. Clear top soil
2. Put in shuttering to same level as path, or do I do this after sub base is down and compacted?
3. Put in a level sub base (I will be using some "crusher" which I am told is crushed brick that they lay under roads etc from a mate who work in demolition). Leaving 100mm to path hight for concrete
4. Compact ground
5. Lay damp-proof membrane (dpm)
6. Fill with concrete just proud of he shuttering (any suggestion for suppliers to Droylsden, Manchester)
7. Rake and shovel the concrete into place
8. Tamp down the concrete to the correct level
9. Covering with plastic sheeting for 7 days
^^^ is that right?

I'd have replaced the path while I'm at it, but that's up to you.
Order of play...
1 - Excavate to formation level
2 - Lay sub-base. You can use crushed brick if you want but your mate that claims they use it as a road building stone is bullshitting you.
3 - Compact sub-base.
4 - Erect formwork/shuttering
5 - place DPM
6 - Get concrete in from SpotMix or Armcon in Stockport
7 - Spread, level and tamp. Consider hiring a vibrating beam screed for a day to get a better quality finish.
8 - cover with plastic sheeting for 2 days. Keep off it for 5 days, no vehicles for at least 7 days.

Hi Tony,
thanks for the reply (I must have missed it somehow - sorry).
I should have took the path up as well but did the side the way you said pretty much apart from I manually tamped with a mate.
Only problem was the temp the day the concrete came (I used sitemix) was over 100 degree's so it dryed up fast my dad got taken into hospital that day (past away now) as well so the concrete just got left, I was misting it as best I could until I go the phone call but I could see hairline cracks apearing even while I was spraying I just couldn't keep up.
The cracks got bigger the next few days about 1mm wide at thickest.
I'm going to get a lean too garage built ontop so there might be a chance all my work was just wasted if they have to dig it all up - don't know yet.

those cracks you can see probably are not very deep, some lads did a path for us at a school last year and because of the hairline cracks it had to come out,but when we broke it up it was still half decent
but,big but i would lower the level for the garage personally
cheers LLL
