Confused.com - Wall coping slab: to point or not?

Wondering what best practice is when laying coping to match the flags on a brick wall in terms of pointing.

Brick wall is 600mm high, 225mm thick, and has a reasonably tight radi (c.3m) in places. Plan is to cut 900x600mm sawn slabs in half and lay a 900x300mm wide coping stone. This gives a generous drip of 38mm either side.

Slab pointing material will be VdW 800 btw.

So: should I point the coping to match the patio (8mm joints planned), or butt joint?

As I see it:

Pointing allows some tolerance in cutting the coping, particualry given radi involved, but leaves a fair chunk of pointing that may eventually drop out, even with gaffer tape left in place.

Butt jointing removes the risk of pointing falling out but means cutting of coping needs to be spot on...


I think I see where the answer is going to come out but thoughts appreciated.

I would say a 900 coping is a bit long for a radius and would cut it to 450 to make the curve gentler and personally would go for a joint, after all, the coping is there to protect the brickwork.

forget copings
on a 3m radii the only thing that will work is a double tile creasing and brick on edge

or just brick on edge
this was around a 4 m radii



this was a bit tighter
