Hi there,

Previous advice has been put to good use and the job's moving on slowly but well and looking good.... (by my standards at least)

But I cant decide on sawn or riven Indian Sandstone.

My stone setts which I've laid on top of the retaining walls are sawn and these will form the outer margin of the paving - so the paving needs to be level with these setts.

These walls are curved, though and the fall is from one wall to the other.

I like the smooth look of sawn, but is it trickier to lay and get it looking spot on? Will Riven help to disguise any imperfections in my laying???

It would have been easier had the layout been square or rectangular!

Any advice from you learned experts?

Many thanks
Adrian Williams

If the edges are sawn I would say go with sawn to blend it in.

I guess using riven slabs can hide the odd error of being a couple of mm out, but as long as you use a 6ft level as a straight edge then getting all of the slabs flush will work, just take your time to make sure its spot on.

I think you know the answer Adrian
sawn is nice but unforgiving
curves look good but very difficult for pros to cut right
keep a bucket of clean water close by for any mortar splashes

cheers LLL :)

....so order sufficient spares to cover for the inevitable cock-ups. Buy extra of the largest size as they can be cut down as necessary to make any of the other sizes.

You're absolutely right....... very good advice....... I'll end up buying 'patio packs' which will inevitabley mean
a good quantity of spare material.... Thanks again.
