I'm now in the possession of 3 tonnes of MOT Type 1 sub base and a plate compactor. This weekend I plan on compacting the sub base after we finish transferring it from the front yard.

I started putting down some string across the sub base to gauge the right depth, but then hammered in some posts as well, with a line to fill up to. I'm not really sure how best to measure the levels, and I guess I'll have to remove the posts and lines when I start compacting. Also, how accurate can you get the levels before and after compacting? Any tips?

I've also out some bricks down to stop the stones falling out the edge. Can I just remove these after compacting, or should I keep them. I'm a little confused about how to do the edge.

those bricks are going to move
you need a permanent retainer to hold the type 1 in place
we try and get the type 1 70mm below finished suurface and then wack the lot

dont wear flip flops

What do I make a permanent retainer out of? I'm guessing I need to do that pretty quickly before compacting.

Mortar the bricks I place. If it's not many get some bags of ready mixed mortar from b&q or wickes, then you cm just add water to it instead of gauging soft sand and cement for a mix.
