Help - black smudge marks over indian sandstone! - Indian sandstone black smudges

I am at a loss! My patio has developed black smudge marks all over it! It looks as if a black printer cartridge has exploded. These started to appear last year and I cleaned the patio this weekend and they are now even worse and will not come off. They appear to be ground into the stone?

Could some one help me or offer a suggestion. Is there anyone in the kent area who would come out and take a look? Really appreciate your responses.
