just wait for the correct temp and cover with hessian
my mate lost a load of brickwork this week due to an overzealous belief in the wonders of frost proofer

I was also planning to point a chimney befor Christmas. How many milder days do you generally need for the mortar to go off?

It's usually 24 hrs @ 3°C and rising but I'm always happier when it gets at least 48hrs above 5°C

mortar is especially liable steve as it is thin and on a chimney exposed
easipoint goes off fast 1 -2 bags does a chimney but you would need to triple wrap it in hessian and it still might go

I thought that would be the case tony, I've left it a bit late now. Is it ok to grind out and wait for a mid couple of days? Or would that undermine the stability of the chimney?

how bad is the chimney steve?
is it still going to be used?
normally for a chimney to warrant repointing most of the existing mortar has failed already and gone
send us a pic if you can
cheers LLL :)

we laid some big saddle back copers the other day with frost proofer and sbr in the mix, the newer chlorine free frost proofers reading the label are claiming depending on how much you but in -4 to -8 degrees working temperature if i remember correctly will check, we were just around the 4 degree mark, had the thermometer out with the brickies

Will try to get a piccy. Its a bit difficult these days because I leave the house in the dark and get home in the dark. I would say about 40% needs re-doing. It was picked up on the building survey when we bought the place. I'm planning to sell it in 12 months, so am assuming it will be picked up again when we come to sell

If mortar works HAVE to be done at low temperatures we have prebagged mortars which work down to -10oC but they're expensive. Colours may also differ to your "normal" mortars.

But they're there as an option.
