simple question, whats this stuff ?
a builder next door told me its granite sand, his mate told me its whinstone, and i have no clue.
Either way, if i compact it with a good few runs with a whacker, and cover it with a weed membrane, can i use it for japanese pebble, and decent grade fake grass.....
again, thanks for any input, great site, and so far awesome input into my project !

strange to find hoggin in scotland ???
either way, if i give it a rake, flatten it out, and give it at good whacking down, think it'll do as a base for part fake grass, part gravel.
very little traffic on this area.
if i went to my local builders merchant, and asked for granit sand, this is roughly what i'd expect.
as always, all input welcome !!!!

Given that you're in Scotland, I would say it's sharp sand rather than hoggin. Doesn't look big enough for whinstone. I've got half a tonne of sharp sand sitting in my yard that is a similar colour.
If it is that... no good as a sub base. Fine to use as a bedding layer though.

I thought that. where i live is ALL shale, the damn stuff is everywhere, im wondering if thats got something to do with it.
Let me put it this way, thats what was under the slabs that we lifted, they had been there for a good 10 years, and were all flat and true thoughout.
is there another name for whinstone ( i'm new to this if you had not guessed that already)
no paving going on here, just a layer ( or two) of decent membrane, a square of granite sets/cobs on a bed of concrete, and fake grass in the middle. outside it will just be a ton or two of pebbles or whatever the mrs finally decides on.
The front garden is a whole other ballgame !

looks like sharp sand. Where your pebbles are going i'd pull it back and put in some mot1. As for the grass, over to pablo.

Its well compaced stuff under. i have taken photo's to show, my slabs out the front ( been laid since at least 1950) are laid on 2 inches of shale. and they are solid !!!!
as for this back area, i planned to mark/dig a shallow trench for the cobble border, concrete them in against a peice of wooden border ( wood inside to get the grass on a straight edge) leave it to cure.
layer of geo fabric, 25mm of compacted 6mm gravel.
outside the cobs, compact the existing base if the level is good, geofabric, fill with ( hopefully not) jappanese pebble.

though't i'd expand with some visual aids
Here's the look i'm aiming for with the granite cobs.
This is the area to paved, already moved a good 2 cubic metres of random gravel/dirt.
Dog clearly likes the idea of fake grass !
the old 600x900's Laid in the 50's, still level. laid on shale from what i can see.
roughly the level i'm aiming for, in order to get the new flags at the height of the old ones, i'll be comacting whatever is left on the area, then the type 1, with 25mm left for a motor bed, and 25mm left for the limestone.....
i'm paving the old slabs too ( i'lll lift the shale and whack hardcore and mortor down.)
2ish tonnes of 6mm grit onto the other peice of land, screeded flat, whacked flat in layerss, then fake grass.
the land that i'm paving near the hosue is nasty mix of solid clay earth, old bricks, and crap gravel. I presume it doesnt need to be overly flat when i whack the type 1 on it, let it fill the voids etc.
I'd like it to be just off level, so that any water draining off heads away from the house, and gets a chance to disapate in the type 1. i presume just a few degrees will do the job ? House is cast concrete, so no massive issue anyway.
only snag i see is that if i keep the patio level, but leave the rise in the path rather than putting a step in, i'll obviously have a gap to make up. still saw at the ready.
anyone see anything i'm missing out ( and yes, i know i still have some earth to move, but its tough doing it by hand when its already compacted clay. and your handballing it. still, did those 30ish 20kg bags in an hour, so just over a ton. gonna dig the rest out to the right depth, and geofab it. then lift the slabs, remove the shale ( could be used under the fake grass ) and get that prepped too.
20l of roundup on the way, geofabric on the way......wheelbarrow on the way....
