I'm a DIYer planning to lay a patio using a pattern made from budget concrete flags and block paving. I'm planning on laying a 75mm sub-base and then as the blocks and flags are a different thickness individually bedding them on a light use bedding mortar.

Would it be better to close-lay the pattern and use KDS for jointing or should I be using mortar joints? What is the widest joints that KDS will fill without washing away?

Thanks for all your help!

2-5mm for kiln dried sand. What type of pointing you use will depend on the pattern you are planning on laying, which flags you are using etc

You say the blocks and slabs are different thickness and that the slabs are budget so I'm going to assume they're quite thin, maybe 22mm in which case I would go with 8-12mm mortar joints.

Thanks, in that case I think I'll go with mortar joints. The budget slabs are actually 29mm thick which I thought was pretty reasonable. Having looked over my pattern I'm going to have to make some of the joints smaller than others to make it all fit right. I'm hoping that this will look ok aesthetically, what are the minimum and maximum sensible sizes for a mortar joint?

6mm is minimum I go down to, for some sawn paving.

15mm is about the maximum. Aesthetically, if we know what blocks / slabs you are using and what type of pattern you are going for I'm sure some people here will offer their opinion about what looks best.
