Daz if you dont know how long it'll take you or what you should charge do you think you should be even doing the work at all?

My thoughts exactly.....you must be able to work out how long it will take you ie: 1.5 days lay flags, .5 day for cutting and other bits, .5 day for pointing.... 2.5 days @ £150.00 p/d = £375.00

plus materials, sharp sand, cement and pointing gear?

Work it all out and divide by the meterage and you have a price per M?

Or if you are being asked for a price per mtr, and you dont know how big the job is, work it out on what you can lay a day etc...thats what i do

well 180m2 is roughly 2 weeks for 3 blokes to lay cut and point, so you could probably drop a bit for that area assuming the levels are good, maybe £15 per metre

% wise there can't be much cutting in on 180m2.

also, I would have thought stone quality, pattern (random vs course) and pointing material/method are going to be the biggest variables.

As above but I'd add that a base prepared by the client or their builder's labourer is very unlikely to be good enough to lay off with out further work. I've never encountered a job like this yet that I've not had to spend time sorting out the base so be sure to mention that if it needs work then the laying rate stops and a labour rate starts until it's sorted.

You've hit the nail on the head Pablo. Can be very dangerous working to someones elses levels.

Have a good look at them before you commit to any work

Exactly that happened to us about 2 weeks back, agreed a price for 90m2 on a prepared sub-base for a developer, but ended up layering in 7 ton of MOT and arguing about the costs involved. At the point of refusal it's amazing what throwing the tools back on the pick up and a quick comment of "We're off sort it yourself" gets you, especially when the developers clients are gawking out the window!!:D
