Hi,
We are new to this but are using 18" slabs to to cover an area at the botton of the garden leading to the compost heap they will be 11 slabs long x 3 slabs wide. They will not get too much use just a few pair of boots and the odd wheelbarrow. Can we lay these slabs straight onto the soil or should we lay them on sand? If so how thick should the sand be and advise on how much we would need would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks,
Susi.
I really an a novice. :)

If you are looking to bodge it, lay sharp sand, level it out and put slabs on that, it' ll look carp in 5 years time though. If you want to do it properly, dig it out, lay a base and then set the slabs on concrete.

Thanks for your advise. We'll do it as you suggest. Life's too short to keep re-doing things.
Many thanks. :)
