Hi
I'm having a go at making a patio in my garden and am confused about what are the best materials to use to get the foundations right. I've been quoted by my local builders yard as needing scalpings, chippings and dust and sand (grit) - is this right? Can I just get away with having a thick layer of scalpings and a layer of sand (both compacted using a power plate) and then cement to bed the flags? I don't want to have to buy unnecessary materials. The depth I've dug down is 6inches. Would the levels be - 4 inches of hardcore and then 1.5 of sand with the flags on top - bringing it up to the 6inch mark to make it level with my surrounding path?
Any advice appreciated.
