Hi,

I'm looking for advice on the best way to drill 24mm and 30mm holes in Indian sandstone ( Rainbow finished and honed ) which I then hope to fit LED lights @ 700mm centres around the edge of my patio -

many thanx in advance

Diamond core cutting attachments for drill. Or check out Haggistini's posts on page 16 and 17, he did a fantastic job putting some lights in sandstone.

you do need to show care, the hammer action can snap the stone, go with a thicker stone and drill before laying it

hire a core cutting set makita do one with smaller cutters not sure of size, have a butchers on the hire sites to find your size. i recently hired one with hammer and core drill setting (rotation only) it takes time but stick with it they should be quite strong slabs with that size hole but i hate cutting them twice ...

When using diamond cores do not, I repeat do not use hammer action.

Use plenty of water to keep it cool and just be patient will take a while for each hole

Or if you use a conventional drill bit sit the slab on some sand and go easy

Hilt make some of the best gear but its well out of reach of most diyers but might be able to hire one with the cores

Take them to a monumental masons, should cost about £10 per hole, maybe less.

Just used a 115mm one to cut around soil pipe, works a treat. Need to spray water onto the bit while drilling, I use garden pump sprayer.

Got to cut holes for up-lighters next!

Never had a problem with buying from these guys, quite cheap to considering where they come from. Take between 1 and 2 weeks to arrive tho.
