Any chance of some advice from the best brains in the business? We installed this slate water feature at our showroom six months ago.

Image

I am sure the picture is self explanatory but just for information there is a reservoir at the bottom with a pump in which pumps the water out over the slate through a stainless steel spill at the top. Noticed that a few of the slates were starting to come loose and its reached the point now where the whole slate front is floating. I am pretty sure I know what caused the problem. The slate cladding is fixed to a rendered block wall and we made the mistake of sealing the render once it had gone off. I think that sealing the render has compromised the adhesion between the slate and the rendered blockwork.

Obviously when we re-do it we wont be sealing the render but I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on construction methods to avoid it failing again

Cheers

Steve

dont seal the render before cladding it steve
use sbr in the render and prime the dry render with sbr before sticking the slate on
maybe some EML might add to its strength

Just to confirm Tony

1. SBR in the render mix

2. Prime finished render with SBR

We are planning to use a rapid setting external adhesive to fix the slate to the wall. Does the above advice stil stand and is there any further precautions that could be taken?

Thanks

saw the culprit straightaway today steve
thermalite or celcon blocks are NOT suitable for outdoor work
you started off with breeze then went to 1 of the above fail blocks
something like that you should of used concrete blocks or semi-engineering bricks

Cheers for the advice there Tony. Projects gone on hold for the the next few weeks at least.

As you have seen today there are quite a few bits at the showroom which need to be finished off. We have had one guy working on it for quite a while now.

We always make the mistake of trying to do everything ourselves. We would be better off just getting someone in to come and do all the work for us.

If we build any more displays we will just get a design done and then go through the standard procedure of getting 3 quotes for the construction.

Or do a deal with a someone you trust in return for recommends and advertising. If their names going to be on it then they'll do it right.
