I am looking to build a patio extension at the same time as my extension and have a question that I very much hope someone can answer.

Whilst asthetics is important, so is my requirement for low maintenance! Unfortunately being on a north facing patio (SE England) I am expecting Algae / Moss etc. to be a constant battle.

Please could someone recommend a stone that is particularily good at resisting algae / mold / moss (I have heard that Porphyry is good and Natural stone poor?)? Alternatively would it be better to get the stone that we want and then apply a sealent / impregnator afterwards?

Thanks all!

Sealing will definately decrease the chance of Algae but will not prevent it all together if the garden is particuarly damp.

You also need to choose a hard/dense stone.

Let me know what style of garden you are trying to achieve and I will try to reccomend a couple of suitable stones

Hi, and thanks for the quick response...

I guess I'm after a fairly traditional look and also like the look of vrious Indian sandstone options. However, probably not too rough a finish as I think that these suit the more cottagey look, which our house is not!

Whilst the most important thing is low maintenance, I'm prepared todo some work to keep the patio in shape and algae free... but if there's a choice.... (!)

Cheers,
Tom
