Had a PIC installed some 8 months ago , finish is very poor lots of printing problems, 8 cracks 3 I would call serious. Contractor didn't want to know. When the job was done contractor removed slabs then threw a few shovels of road plannings on the surface and compacted.Area is 60 sq metres Concrete laid over top of this.
Sub soil is clay . My question iswhat depth of sub base should be underneath and of what sort of material?

Thanks in advance

The sub-base should be a minimum of 4" of compacted MOT Type 1. However, many firms use road planings as they are substantially cheaper. MOT is £30 a tonne or so whilst I can get over two tonnes of road planings for a tenner (I have a truck so collect them myself). I know driveways laid on road planings that have lasted the test of time, however, most PIC supply houses recommend Type 1.

So you need to check your contract... Did you get it in writing that it was to be Type 1?

Whatever the sub-base it should be a minimum of 4". Many PIC firms say for a patio it need only be 3" and for a path it need only be 2". This is bollocks! 4" is the absolute minimum and it should be well wacked.

Does anyone else have views over road planings versus Type 1?

Planings are ok (we use type1 without fail these days) but make sure there are no weeds contained in them. One or two jobs we used planings on ended up with us relaying the job as weeds came up through the tarmac. "Old mans beard" they called it, when I was younger.........

Hi Lutonlager lout and anyone else who replied , I did think it should have been mot type 1. Solicitors(legal cover is wonderful) were instructed some time ago, expert witnesses report slated workmanship. Contractor is saying expert witness is not an expert in PIC.

Hope we can really shove it up him.

I'll keep you informed of the outcome.
