Hi All,

I've just laid a new patio and have used a wet mortar pointing method thought that was the best method but upon further reading on your site for riven flags looks like I should have used a semi-dry method. Have have also made a few more errors I laid it at the weekend when it was really hot and didn't cover it over and I think it may have dried to fast and I also walked on it straight after pointing and also I had only let it settle for a day before pointing. Serves me right I suppose for only half reading the pointing article and then thinking I knew what I was doing.

Anyway most of it is fine but some some cracking has appeared where it has been walked on before being fully set, what would be the best method to fix this please don't tell me I need to get out all the mortar and start again.

Another thing if some mild staining has occured from the black dye in the mortar will that come off over time from weathering, the flags are Marshalls riven flags

I'd appreciate any advice thanks

I wont tell you then that you need to remove the mortar that has cracked but there is no other advice apart from that. We all make mistakes and learn from them. Depending on how badly stained the flags are it's hard to tell

Sorry you said mild staining so shouldn't be a problem to remove

I thought that would be the answer, just annoyed with myself for not fully researching before rushing headlong into it.

Most of it are just hairline cracks where it has just separated from the side of the flag which is the most annoying thought there might be some trick of the trade, that would magically fix it.

How long should I leave it settle before attempting to re-point?

Is hammer and chisel the best method to remove the pointing?
