Fantastic site this, this is our bible now.

We are currently re-doing and extending our patio. We had some sub-base delivered, I wheel-barrowed 1 tonne from front driveway into garden yesterday and we are having problems levelling it, using a rake just moves all the big bits leaving the fines in another place. Is it just a case of perserverance and moving the stuff around, we hired a wacker plate and have used that on it , so long as it is compacted enough does it matter if one part is all stone and another all little stones with fines... Am I making sense?

So time consuming aswell ...

Any help will be appreciated, even a hint if we are doing it right :-)

Thanks

is it MOT type 1 you have had deliverd? i dont seem to have this problem, maybe try using a shovel?

you will struggle to compact the parts of the subbase with no fines, its should all be mixed together for optimum compaction.

My pet hate is getting MOT deliverd from a builders merchant and they scoop the stuff up from the bottom of the pile, and you end up with a bucket of the biggest stones in the stuff as they all roll down from the top! :D

Thanks for that. Yes as you say we had sub-base (I did ask for Type 1) from a builders/aggregate company and had huge lumps of aggregate, had to sift through 4 tonnes to find the good stuff, in the end had 1 tonne left of the large stuff which they are coming to collect next week. We managed to compact it eventually although did put the project back somewhat.

Thanks for your help.
