Hi folks. I've been reading the main site for a few days to work out what I need for a small patio I'm laying.

The patio is going to be where the shed is going, and the wheelie bins, so isn't going to have any heavy use.

I'm using 600 x 600 x 50 BS flags.

There's 2 areas. Area 1 is 3040mm x 1820mm. Area 2 is 1620mm x 1820mm.

I was going to lay a sub-base of 50mm, using Scalpings from Jewson. I was looking at using type 1, but I think this might be too heavy duty given that the patio will have light usage.

For the bedding, I was either going to use Slablayer, or a 6:1 Sharp Sand/Cement mix and lay that to 30mm.

Does this sound ok? Is the Slablayer ready mix any good, or would I be better to mix it myself?

I'm also not sure about the amounts I need. For the sub-base, the volume is 0.43m cubed, but I'm not sure how to translate that into the weight. Would I just go to Jewsons with the dimensions and they'd be able to help me out?

i think you would be better to mix your own .cheaper if you buy sand loose .would say a tonne or tonne and half of sand .tonne of mot .sand and cement through a mixer would be better too .little touch of water

Thanks. I think type 1 will be too big for what I need. I was going to use 20mm instead. I think I'll just get them in bulk bags, then if I have too much sand, I can always use it to sort the draining on the lawn. I'll try looking for a local builders merchant - any recommendations for one in the Glasgow area?

Do you have to use a min 75mm depth with type1? That's what I read, but would 50mm depth be ok?

I've found a couple of independent suppliers, one quite close so I'll check them out for prices.
