Have contracted a company to lay indian flags to my driveway aprox 75 foot worth.I have been told by two other contractors (granted not in driveways)that the sub base and the laying method they are using may not be deep enough.the original drive was concrete which has been pulled up,they have compacted with a little more stone ( not much ) and are laying on a full mortar base aprox 5'' thick. Then they are going to point everything later.
As they have just started laying i wanted advice before they continue as to the depth of the aggregate sub base and then the depth of the mortar base for laying the indian flags. This is costing me short of 6k and dont want to spend it on a sub standard job. These guys are coming reccomended but maybe im worrying over nothing.
Any help would be apreciated.

Many thx

When you say "they have added a little more stone." How much was there before? it needs to be a minimum of 100ml deep and the bedding needs to be 40 ml. 5 inch is way to thick for bedding, unless it is concrete ???

Thickness of mortar bed is 60mm on average and the bedding is between 80-100mm thick ( just found a concrete slab under some of it which left only 30mm of hardcore)
Have tested in 3 locations just in case.

Cowboys are in town again. stop them before they go any further. there should not be anything like that under the sub base, the subbase is to shallow and bedding to thick, maybe because the sand is cheaper in comparison to mot.

what mortar are they using?
indian stone for a drive way really needs to be laid on 100mm of concrete
on at least 100mm of compacted type 1

Have spoken to the contreacter and feel much better now .

underneath the hardcore there is a fine compound which was there when the original driveway was laid ...this will act as the type 1 agregate which has been compressed ...he has taken the flag out and re applied some more agregate to the area and i am happier with the installation..

many thx for the help on here though

Fine compound? And what about the flags he buried under there. What was his explanation for that?

there was only one flag i had noticed and he explained that this was solid and wouldnt budge but would dig down and remove it to keep me happy. But that underneath all this including the flag the base work was this fine granular compound.
Everything seems to be running smooth;y now and thx for the help
