I am laying patio stone flags (I believe they are slate), 300x 300mm x 11/25mm thick only. I am putting a sub-base of hardcore as I need to raise the level anyhow. This is in a house rear garden with foot traffic only.
If I cannot just lay them on a bed of sand, but need to lay them on mortar, can I use the sharp sand I already bought? if so, what should be the ratio of sand/cement and the thickness of the bed?

Thanks, useful page. I had not realised that, even when making mortar, sharp sand is better than building sand
