Hi,

I'm looking to lay a patio of ~25mm slate onto a 100mm dot type 1 sub-base. The units are up to 600x400 in size.

I note on the Slate Paving section you recommend a stiff Class IV mortar mix for the bedding when the tiles are less than 30mm.

Therefore I'm assuming a mix of 1:7-8 Cement + Sand & Plasticiser. As this is mortar but still for bedding am I best of using Building Sand or Grit/Sharp Sand?

Many thanks,

Simon

Use sharp sand, and give serious consideration to using a bond bridge. A lot of the slate we now use is a bugger to 'stick' to the bedding, and there are a growing number of incidences of slate coming loose after a few weeks. If and when I get a spare 30 mins, I intend updating that slate paving page.
