I'm soon to purchase roughly 40sqm of sandstone for a patio area (that this great site gave me the inspiration start a few months ago). I want the slabs to be very lightly riven (not polished) and have narrowed it down to Global and s/flair purestone. Can any of you guy's who work with this stuff regularly please advise as to whether they differ much. I'm planning to order single size crates and do a dutch pattern which i will forward pics of when under way.

P.S Just down the road from you LLL in Hitchin.

Should have added that i've struggled to find a dispaly for the stoneflair stuff locally and was considering buying online hence my dilemma. Could'nt believe the stonemarket prices, local merchant said Marshalls bought them out and "that say's it all really".

Just to give you an idea I have just completed my Patio using this website. I used Stoneflair Purestone Rosemount. It still needs jointing and a few other bits, but i`ve laid the last slab today...!!!!

Looks great. Can i ask if you bought online or inspected the crates from a local merchant first? Just a bit worried about getting some heavily riven slabs mixed in. Yours look very uniform, exactly what i'm after.

I was suprised how riven some flags were, Luckily i was well short of the 15m2 pack i ordered so could pick and choose the less riven, Probably got about 3m2 left over. I bought online from simply paving. Had no problems, They said i could return any defective ones free of charge there were just a couple of broken slabs from the squareing off kit. They replaced these within 2 days.

Thanks, that's useful to know (that you can return the duff ones). Looks like a few merchants have gone over to Global stone as stoneflair have gone down the web road. Just out of interest did you lay em on a Building sand mortar (as stoneflair suggest), a sharp sand mortar mix or a lean mix?

4 inch of Mot for the subbase(Whackered), 3 inches of 5-1 sharp sand(Mildly moist!).

i use imageshack for the uploads
hitchin is a funny sort of place, when i was a kid it was a bit down at heel and olde worlde, people still pointed at planes

now its like a poor man's St.Albans (not that its cheap) with nice delis ,restaurants etc, then at about 11pm at the weekend all the loons come out to play
remember time spent setting out will pay you back
all the best good luck
LLL :)

how long has that wall been built?
looks like LBC rustics, very poor choice of brick for a retaining wall, they are one of the most notorious bricks for "exploding faces " in the winter
blue staffs are nice on top,but rustics are bad for garden walls
