I am laying a patio its about a meter and a half away from the house and it will be situated below the bottom of the house. I hear a lot about the patio having to be 150mm below the DPC of the house. Does this rule have to applied as strictly if the patio is not really flush with the house? Or does it still have to be applied but there is more leniency, say 100mm or less below DPC? Can someone explain?

The patio's 1.5m away from the house? A photie would be good James - it's not that clear what the question is?

I hope I'm reading this correctly and I stand to be corrected but I would say that if your patio is 1.5 metres away from your house then it doesn't matter what height it is.
It's only when the patio touches or almoust touches the house that the 150mm applies.
Think about it, there must be loads of houses on hills that have steps leading down to the house. those steps would be above the dpc and they can't all be wrong.

Its just if the patio abuts the wall. If there's a gap of a meter , I wouldn't worry as the top water will drain off before it can leak into your cavity wall.
You can see gravel boarder (usually 6" strip by wall) where the layer has got either the level wrong and created a water trap or ran out of saw blades and couldnt be bothered cutting
