Hi all, looking for a bit of help.

I have a two-strip driveway in place at the moment but it's seen better days. I have decided i am going to dig it out and lay new slabs and stone chips in the some lay out as before. I have a few questions listed below.

Do i need to dig down the full 200mm and lay a sub base?

or is 50mm enough to dig out and just lay the slabs and stone chip on top of the grit sand layer?

When you say "it's seen better days" what do you mean? If the slabs are broken it may be indicative of a failed sub-base in which case you'd need to address it. If it's just old with one or two cracks the sub-base may well be fine. In any case and as a bare minimum, the bedding course will need to be disposed of and re-laid with the new slabs.

Thank you for the reply, here is some further info on the drive.

I believe the driveway is as old as the house which is around 40 years old. A lot of the slabs have started to rise up and move out of position. It is only the slabs in the middle of the drive that have risen up and broken badly though. I think this might be because from the beginning of the drive there is slop down the the middle point of the drive, then from the middle point there is a slight gradient going up the way toward the end of the drive. Over time in the middle of the drive stone chips have been worn thin and the top layer has become very compact with cars, this has allowed water to congregate in the middle of the drive eventually moving the slabs and bursting them.
