I live in a new build with a tiny patio out the back.
The current slabs have just been placed onto sand by the builders.
I want to place 6 more slabs down (1.8m x 1.8m) but am not sure how much sand & cement i will need to place these down properly.

Many thanks

10-15 25kg bags sharp sand should do it. I expect the existing slabs are on a lean mix rather than just sand? In which case you'll need 2 bags cement as well.

Lift all your existing flags and start from scratch! I have never seen flags laid well on a new building estate, they never lay them properly. They usually grab a bit of concrete from the machine and throw the flags down with no grouting= sinking, no drainage and moss/weeds.
But if you want a quick fix and a patio that will last 2-3 years follow previous posters' advice:p
If they have really been laid on sand i'll give it 6 months to one year:p

so the paving slabs outside my house ,that have been laid on *sand* with no *grouting* have lasted since 1922,the luftwaffe,my pick up and virgin media have all been at them
and yet, still they are there
thats a bit longer than 6 months to a year?

THEY, being the likes of me and a large number of contractors on this site. I can assure you that i have done the job for years and was trained by the best. you might get the occasional pikey gang. Whatever i have laid flags etc on have complied to BS. :)

I'd concur - all the slabbing gangs I've seen on the new builds we work on lay slabs perfectly on the correct spec subase/bedding.

If they didn't then they'd be back there relaying them........which they don't.

hahahaha- maybe this is a manchester thing (and warrington), i've never seen good flags on a new estate here, i've always refused to extend a patio with new flags here because they generally have no fall and that gravel gap between the flags and the house will not be good.

the guy has been on all my posts, my methods are proven to work yet he questions my integrity just because i provide common sense easy solutions that aren't usual, i think he's a tit, sorry but he's been disrespectful and deserves it.

normally flowjoe arrives with some humorous quip that deflates any trouble that may be brewing between new and old, good and bad drunk and sober members .... my only hope is that he turns up soon before blood is shed :D

I`ve lurked on this forum for over 3 years now and this is my first post, hello every one. MSH I personally feel that some of your posts are a little harsh, I still remember when you and R&A chastised WOP for trying to help someone. The people that contribute to this site made it possible for me to lay 60m2 of monoblock and 25m2 of patio at our new house with the help they & Tony were kind enough to give. If you disacre with someone please try to be a little nicer about it, because as the man says you do come across as a little rude.
God loves a tryer
