I am laying a stone patio and have consolidated the subgrade and subbase in anticipation of remaining layers. My dilema is I have a lot of what my local builders merchant calls "ballast"or "20mm stone to dust" left over from another part of my house project.Would this be suitable or even preferable to use to bring level up to bedding layer instead of compacted and screeded sharp sand? I imagine it will be harder to screed, but is it ok to use?

Yes - it will be OK for a patio. I'd be reluctant to use iot for a driveway, but you should be fine using it beneath a patio

Thanks Tony but just out of interest does this sugest that compacted sharp sand is prefrable?

Not for a DIYer - use mortar: see Bedding Materials
