Hello all

So I have moved around 10 tons of MOT Type 1 into place. I'm now ready for a weekend job of laying.

There seems to be lots of conflicting guidance on the depth of the bedding layer.

I worked it out so that the bed layer would be 50mm assuming my sandstone would be around 40mm thick, however, some of the sandstone is just 15mm thick - is it ok to have this sat on a bed of 75mm sand / cement (8:1 mix)?

Furthermore, some (but not much) of the sandstone is 60mm thick which will sit on a 20-30mm bed.

PS this is for a light load patio!

cheers for you help guys

Darren

As long as you never have less than 25mm, you have to accept that a handful of flags might have more than the 50mm recommended maximum.

It's a recommendation, not a hard-and-fast law punishable by death, so you can get away with an additional 20mm of so occasionally. :)

Ok - so your confident it won't sink on a bed of 80mm shapr sand?

Wow - so what are the punishable by death mistakes in paving (maybe the spot bedding).

Hopefully it's not just sharp sand but a sharp sand & cement mix.

Rick is right: if you are going to risk eternal damnation by using more than 50mm, then it *must* be cement-bound, not just sand. Sand alone *will* settle.

Paving crimes against humanity punishable by death...

1 - Spot bedding
2 - GeoFix
3 - "That drive doesn't need a sub-base"
4 - "We always mix cement through the kiln-dried to make it stay in the joints"
5 - Decking
6 - Travertine

Geofix is a very poor brush in stuff to point slabs,it failed at the first slab, cant compare it to anything from rompox or gftk, MSH :)

ok good stuff - yes, I am going 8:1 mix sharp sand top cement.

another one has to be paying the 13 yr old kid next door £30 to move 7 ton of sandstone from front to back of house.

I'm shocked a teenager who WORKS! Are you sure your not part of an elaborate child labour sting operation. £30 is a bargain, should have got him to move the type 1.

That wheelbarrow chap who previously posted on here missed a sales opportunity for shifting that stone.

Not sure he will ever work again after that.
