about to lay 50mm concrete slabs 600x600 on a driveway, (customers choice !)already got 100mm hardcore compacted down. would i be best to lay on unbound grit sand or cement bound grit sand? will be individually bedding due to size of slabs.
any thoughts?

TBH stoke brickie you would be best laying them on 100mm of leanmix concrete
once they start driving on them and turning the wheels with power steering they will start to move and snap
you will get the " packet of crisps " effect commonly seen on paved driveways
i take it you are using prestressed slabs,you know the "council" ones?

thanks for reply.
As i have already set the edgings in i have only allowed for 50mm bed plus the slab. is there another bedding alternative? Would 50mm compacted unbound grit sand be no good?
what other alternatives would you suggest to these 50mm concrete slabs in a similar price zone?

as you have 50mm bed and 50mm slab,
blockpaving the only other option for car traffic driveway,
about 10 years ago i laid 2x2 council slabs on compacted unbound sharp sand,they was pressed grannet but held up no problems to this day,as it was a job of love they was happy but its not the way to go,
slabs and car traffic dont go togher,unless they are 65mm small element paving for footway use

if i have no other option but to use the 5omm slabs what would be the best bedding material? i only have 50mm max height available for the bedding material.

if thats all you have and cant change
i would go for a sand and cement bed, moist mix and lay each one,if they are perfect pressed slabs go for a screeded sand and cement bed,

think i'll go for individual bedding due to size of them.
what strength mix for bedding do you recommend? it is sharp sand you talking about i take it.

its got to be grit/flooring sand and msh is correct you would be better screeding off the whole area and lay them onto the prepared bed,get someone to help you with 600 by 600's
TBH i wouldn't want to be guaranteeing this drive with the spec you have given,but sounds like a rock and a hard place right now

spread the sand/cement mix and tread it down,so you don't get any hollow spots as it will be taking a car,screed you way out and lay back in,walk on slabs you laid only tread in middle of slabs,
hope you have made it to fit full slabs ???

thanks for all your advice
i've managed to talk to customer and change his mind. will now be using block pavers.
didn't really go down that road with the chance of the slabs not lasting.
price not much different anyway so thats good.
