We've just got a new conservatory and we're getting a new patio laid in indian sandstone (30m2) next to it in the next day or two. The intention was to take up the old concrete and then put the sub-base etc down.

The builders have had a look and the concrete is in 3 big solid slabs about 4-5 inches thick and they seem very solid. There is a crack in one of them but again it still seems solid and there is no movement in them at all.

They were going to take it up but it will be a big job and have suggested that they could just lay on top of the concrete which would save us money on all the sub-base and time as well.

My questions are

1) Is it OK to lay on top of the existing concrete or would it be best to take it up?

2) If it is ok to lay on top of the concrete will they just need to lay it on a dry sand and cement mix or something else?

They have said they will take it up if I want so it's not just them being lazy, they're just giving me an option

If need be I can post some pics tonight

Thanks

I've read that and it relates to laying on top of an existing patio flags. These would be laid on top of existing patio flags it would be on top of 3 large solid concrete slabs approx 4-5 inches thick

if you want to save on time and money it would pay to rent, a micro crusher to create a suitable sub-base material from the broken out concrete. Saves wheelbarrowing spoil from the back to the front of the house, paying to dispose and wheelbarrowing subbase that you have paid for back round.

All depends upon access to the working area, I guess!
