I put down 100 to 150 mm of crushed subbase about 12 months ago and used a very large roller on it then. We have since been driving on it before the final surface was laid. Where I turn around the base has formed shallow potholes where the base has been disturbed regularly. I now want to prepare it again to lay indian stone and my contractor wants to scrape some of the surface again and then lay 75mm of concrete. He then says a solid bed is when you use a 7 or 8 spot mortar method. He says when the paver is tapped down this creates your solid bed. Is this right. Also can I not just redress the current sub base where it is low and fill any voids with fine grit and use a wacker plate on it.

Are you planning on laying sandstone flags on your driveway. How thick are they. If you are going to use a standard patio pack or anything less than 50mm then it will fail.

Hi thanks for the reply. Yes some of the flags may be less than 50mm, are you saying it will fail because of the subbase or the spot method the contractor proposes to use, He said to me that putting spots close together will create a full bed when the pavers are tapped down. This does sound a bit odd to me. Would I be better putting down a solid cbm4 type screed as it says on the web site and laying directly on to that.

This will be a disaster. Think about the stress of weight on one corner of the slab - if there is any kind of even minor void under the slab it WILL snap.
You can use paving slabs but they need to be, as pablo says, a minimum of 50mm (which rules out any standard patio pack) and be laid on a full bed (see Tony's pages for concrete specs for vehicular trafficked paving). If your contractor recommends spot bedding you should not use him, if he recommends patio slabs for a driveway you should not use him and if he recommends both, call for the town sherrif and run his arse out of 'gulch.
