Right ! I'm ready to order some top gravel for my drive, but I'm looking for something hard wearing and dark.

I'm considering Black Basalt (10mm) or Slate chippings. I'd prefer 10mm Granite but have only found Silver/Grey which isn't really dark enough.

Will Basalt be any good for a driveway ?

Driveway is around 80 sq metres.

I'll be wakkering the gravel down after it's laid, and have already edged the area, plus put down hardcore and 100mm of Type 1 stone.

Also I have been looking at ordering in tonne bags (restricted access for large loads) from one of the bulk suppliers on the internet, any experience of these ?

Any advice anyone ?

Thanks in advance

I'd opt for the basalt in preference to the slate, as it is much harder and less prone to crushing.

Internet suppliers: there's internet supplers and there's internet suppliers. Many that claim to be "nationwide" actually rely on regional suppliers to fulfil orders originating outside their immediate area, and so you can end up stuck in a supply chain. It's much better to find a local supplier, even if it costs a couple of quid extra, in case you need any extra or run into problems.

Thanks Tony, I now have some samples (from nationwide Internet suppliers) so just need to source a local supplier (near Daventry - Northants).
