We laid this patio approx. 1 month ago, after approx. 2 weeks these marks were noticed on 3 flags. It looks like rust, and after reading this site I came to the conclusion that perhaps something had been spilt on the flags (with acid content) and it was reacting with metals in the stone.
Image
However the second picture shows new markings that have just appeared too. We haven't used any acid on the stone and the markings are appearing on lots of different flags now.

Image
We were going to change the first 3 flags but the problem is happening on other flags now on this job, so i'm wondering if anyone has encountered this before. Intially the markings were all on the same coloured flags but its now happening on other shades of the stone too.
We have laid thousands of india stone flags and never had this issue before. I'm desperatly hoping for some advice as our customer is understandably annoyed but we don't want to keep lifting flags only for the problem to continue. Cheers.

Excuse the girlie comment but it looks like there is the same colouration on the jointing. That would suggest its something to do with the sub grade rather than the slabs?!?!?!

Come on boys you all wanna tell me I'm wrong.....

Could potentially be the iron ore content with the sandstone reacting due to its exposure to the elements. Well, it has been sited within the stone for 1000's of years with no exposure to chemical reaction until it was quarried.

Hey, it's natural. People are supposed to love natural these days!

I was talking about lawn fertiliser. The reason I ask is that I have seen fertiliser make marks exactly like these all the time. The staining is nothing to do with the flags as the stains also originate in the pointing.

Hell that looks horrible - but how can it be deposits in the stone when the pointing is now 'contaminated'?

Fertiliser looks to be the favourite culprit.

They are too round and uniform to be in the stone. Looks like drops of liquid, or somethig rusting.

Big circle - tin, small circle - lid, small marks - splash from brush or similar, run from slab to grout - liquid something.

well its a mystery, can't pinpoint it to any external thing so just going to have to put it down to metal comming out of the stone and change it (it was a very random batch of stone), customer denies any other stuff so i guess its a case of try and break even and keep customer happy- damn i wish marsalls did india stone this cheap- they would have paid for us to re-do it lol
