Uneven flags - bedding question - 25mm-40mm - how do they sit properly?

Patio flagstones (slabs), concrete flags, stone flags including yorkstone and imported flagstones.

Leading on from my query on laying IS flags...

I am fairly confident about laying the flags, but one thing I don't think I understand... the thickness of the varying slabs/flags - and how they sit in the bedding layer.

When you put a bedding layer in - for a couple of flags, say, and the couple of flags you want to lay vary in thickness between 25mm and 40mm, how do you treat the bedding layer?

Does roughening up the surface really accommodate the different sizes, or should you (I) add a bit more (or remove) bedding layer as appropriate?

Satisfied with the result.

Yes and yes!

As James says, you'll soon get the knack. Don't be too precious about preparing the bed - you'll find it quicker if you dump half the barrow out and spread it about by feathering it with the spade!

Good luck
