I would like to install a natural stone driveway and my contractor is insisting that it be laid on a cement base.

However I am concerned that the cement base might cause problems for trees situated near the edge of the driveway.

I anticipated that we might use 3" thick stone which, I understand, may be installed on a gravel/sand base. This would allow water to drain through to tree roots which might be situated underneath the driveway. I also expected that we would not apply mortar between the stones so as to allow for drainage.

Does anyone have experience with this issue and recommendations?

normally stone would need to be laid on a cementious bed ,so your contractor is right
it wouldnt take cars etc laid on to sand gravel

you can have permeable block paving but AFAIK it wont work for flags
