know what you mean but do use a full bed of mortar just my way:) woz still loading the bed when pic taken

yeah i guessed as much,as a bricklayer foremost i tend to put down the bed by the trowel so for a 600 by 600 unit it would take 7 -8 trowels which i would then feather to the level
it can all get a bit messy with a shovel and a wet mix IYKWIM
